Negligence and Bedsores

Bedsores are preventable injuries that are almost always a result of inadequate care. Residents who are bedridden or spend a significant amount of time in a bed or wheelchair are most susceptible to developing pressure sores.

Sores develop on regions of the skin that have been damaged or killed due to lack of circulation caused by extended periods of pressure on the one area. They are most likely to develop in areas where the bone is closest to the skin, such as the hips, ankles, knees, elbows and buttocks.

With proper care and attention, however, residents should not develop these injuries. Nursing homes should be well-equipped with staff who are well-versed in the techniques of preventing bedsores, such as:

  • Repositioning a resident every few hours
  • Helping residents lie in positions that reduce pressure
  • Utilizing pressure-relieving devices
  • Ensuring good hygiene and dry bedding and clothing
  • Continued monitoring of residents, especially those at the greatest risk for developing sores

Nursing home negligence leads to the development of pressure sores when:

  • A facility places profit ahead of care and keeps too little staff onboard
  • Staff do not have time to or simply fail to regularly monitor patients
  • Staff fail to help residents with repositioning
  • Staff do not provide residents with proper hygiene

When a facility fails in their obligations to provide adequate care to their residents, bedsores can develop and worsen over time. Our nursing home bedsores attorneys can help you hold these facilities accountable for their negligence.

Stages of Bedsores

Bedsores are classified in four stages that identify how far the condition has progressed.

  • Stage one – In the initial development of decubitus ulcers, patients will experience pain, inflamed skin and skin temperature that is warmer than usual.
  • Stage two – As the ore progresses, the sore begins to damage the outer layers of the skin, which may break open or wear away. At this stage the sore begins to deepen into the skin and may look like a blister, crater or scratch.
  • Stage three – At this stage, the sore continues to extend to deeper layers of the skin and may appear as a small crater.
  • Stage four – This is the most severe stage of the sores and can cause damage to muscle and bone and cause irreversible damage.

If these sores are not properly cared for, the patient may also develop a serious infection. The further along a sore is, the more likely the resident is to suffer permanent damage. Our nursing home bedsores attorneys know how painful these sores can be, which is why we are committed to helping victims of nursing home neglect seek the justice they deserve.
