Recent data from two national safety organizations shows a significant increase in traffic fatalities in recent years – a trend that does not seem to be slowing.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there was a 7.2 percent increase in traffic fatalities from 2014 to 2015. The last single-year increase significant was in 1996 when fatalities increased 8.1 percent over the previous year.

With a nine percent increase in traffic fatalities for the first half of 2016, preliminary data from the National Safety Council (NSC) indicates that this trend is likely through this year. These numbers are also 18 percent higher than the same time period two years ago. If you have been injured in an auto accident contact the trusted personal injury lawyers in Las Vegas for a free, no-obligation consultation.

The NSC estimates that 19,100 people have been killed and 2.2 million have been seriously injured in U.S. car accidents since January, costing Americans approximately $205 billion.

Both organizations attribute the increases to an improved economy and lower gas prices, which are allowing Americans to hit the road more frequently. However, despite these factors, organization leaders are concerned by the sharp increase.

To help improve driver safety, the NSC recommends that drivers:

  • Never drive while under the influence
  • Always buckle up when in a vehicle
  • Avoid fatigued driving by getting plenty of sleep and taking frequent breaks
  • Never use a cellphone while behind the wheel, including hands-free devices
  • Stay engaged in your teen’s driving habits as this age group is most at-risk for being involved in an accident
