A 16-year-old driver was killed in a crash that occurred while he was stopped at a red light in the northwest valley on Thursday morning.

The collision happened shortly before 6:30 a.m. when the teen’s Honda Accord was stopped in a northbound lane at a red light on North Durango Drive at Farm road.

The 47-year-old driver of a Chevy Trailblazer failed to stop at the light and rear-ended the teen’s vehicle while traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver of the SUV stopped shortly after in a nearby parking lot.

Both drivers were taken to University Medical Center where the teen later died from his injuries, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The driver of the other vehicle is suspected of being impaired at the time of the accident and has been treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

The intersection at North Durango Drive and Farm Road was closed for several hours after the collision.
