Samsung has ceased production of its new flagship smartphone the Galaxy Note 7. The South Korean tech company has already issued a global recall of the device after users reported instances of the phone emitting smoke, melting from overheating and even exploding.
Initial reports of the Galaxt Note 7 malfunction began in late August, when a consumer reported that his phone exploded. Not long after, others began posting their own stories and alerting news outlets of the dangers the device posed. Dangers Continue Even After Global Recall
The recall began on Sept. 2, when 2.5 million phones were recalled less than one month after the device was unveiled. One million phones were recalled in the U.S. alone.
Almost two weeks later, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned consumers to stop using the phones altogether and issued its own recall on Sept. 15.
After concluding that faulty batteries were causing the phones to overheat, Samsung offered replacement devices with different batteries that the company claimed would be safe and did not pose a danger to consumers. That did not solve the problem, however.
Since then, several high-profile incidents have occurred that contradict Samsung’s safety assurances about the replacement phones.
A Southwest flight had to be evacuated before take-off because a passenger’s replacement Galaxy Note 7 began emitting smoke. In another case, a 13-year-old girl suffered from minor burns after a replacement phone melted in her hand. One man was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation when smoke began pouring out of his replacement device that was sitting on his nightstand.
Samsung has since warned customers to turn off their phones and stop using both the original and replacement devices.
Major cellphone providers in the U.S., such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon have all stated that they will discontinue distribution of the Galaxy Note 7 due to safety concerns.
