Students in the Clark County School District will head back to school on Monday, Aug. 29, and Las Vegas police are working to prepare drivers for increased traffic and pedestrians on the roads.

In an effort to remind drivers to slow down and change their driving habits for the school year, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Southern Nevada law enforcement are promoting a campaign titled “Slow Your Roll.”

Law enforcement officials are highlighting the important role that drivers and parents play in enhancing safety near schools. It is vital that everyone follow safe driving practices while traveling through school zones and when pedestrians are in the area.

If your child is injured while walking or riding the bus to school, our experienced team of personal injury lawyers in Las Vegas can help you fight for the justice and compensation your child deserves.

While in school zones, drivers should:

  • Obey all traffic laws
  • Follow the speed limit
  • Never pass other cars or make a U-turn
  • Avoid stopping on crosswalks
  • Avoid double parking on crosswalks

With buses hitting the roads again, drivers should also remember these important safety tips for driving near buses:

  • Buses stop frequently, so leave plenty of space between your vehicle and a bus
  • On two-lane highways, come to a complete stop if a bus’s red lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended
  • Never pass a stopped school bus from behind as children are boarding or exiting the vehicle
  • Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and a stopped bus to allow children to walk safely to and from the bus

Parents are encouraged to remind their children about important safety tips for pedestrians, such as always looking left and right before crossing a street and only crossing at crosswalks. Police also recommend walking or driving the path your child takes to school to highlight the safest route.
