On Sept. 11, a bicyclist on a residential sidewalk was struck by a drunk driver in a pickup truck, sending him through a cinderblock wall. The bicyclist was critically injured and eventually succumbed to his injuries. The driver fled the scene without calling 911.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., officers located the severely injured bicyclist in the backyard of a residence on Torrey Pines Drive. The man’s bicycle was pinned under a pickup truck, which had an empty beer can and a case of beer inside. The cycler was transported to University Medical Center, where he later died. Witnesses reported seeing the truck’s driver abandoning his vehicle and running from the accident scene. Officers were stationed just blocks away from the accident at the man’s home, where they located the pickup truck driver upon his return. Police say the man’s breath smelled of alcohol, his eyes were bloodshot, and he presented physical evidence indicating his involvement in an accident.

Officers drove the man to the accident scene, where he confessed to the hit-and-run accident. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI following numerous failed sobriety tests and faces counts of duty to stop at an accident scene.

This accident was not the man’s first time being investigated for involvement in a driving-related crime. He was sentenced to time in prison in 2010 after he was convicted of driving the vehicle used by his codefendant in an attempt to kidnap three children.
